“Yeh dosti hum nahin todenge…”
Few songs instantly evoke emotion the way this one does.
Within seconds, many of us are transported back to Sholay. We don’t just remember the song. We remember Jai, Veeru, the bike, the sidecar, the laughter and everything their friendship represented.
In NLP, this is called an anchor.
A simple melody becomes linked to an entire emotional experience.
Bollywood has been creating anchors for decades.
Perhaps that’s why some friendships stay with us long after the credits roll.
This Friendship Day, let’s revisit some iconic Bollywood friendships through the lens of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). You may discover that our favourite films have been quietly teaching us powerful lessons about connection, communication and human behaviour all along.
1. Sholay. Rapport Beyond Words
Jai and Veeru rarely explain their friendship.
They don’t need to.
Their rhythm, humour, body language and unwavering trust create deep rapport.
In NLP, rapport is far more than getting along. It is the ability to enter another person’s world without losing your own.
Notice how the two friends complement each other. One is quieter, the other more expressive. One thinks before speaking, the other speaks before thinking. Yet their differences strengthen rather than weaken the relationship.
Perhaps the strongest friendships are not built on similarity.
They are built on acceptance.
2. 3 Idiots. Everyone Lives in a Different Map
Farhan dreams of photography.
Raju longs for security.
Rancho seeks learning.
Each of them is pursuing a different version of success because each carries a different internal map of the world.
One of the foundational presuppositions of NLP is:
The map is not the territory.
Our experiences, beliefs and values shape how we interpret reality.
Conflict often begins when we assume our map is the only correct one.
Friendship grows when we become curious about another person’s map instead of trying to replace it with our own.
3. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Change Your State. Change Your Life
Three friends.
Three fears.
One unforgettable journey.
Skydiving.
Deep-sea diving.
Running with the bulls.
Each experience shifts far more than behaviour.
It changes identity.
NLP teaches that lasting change often begins with changing our emotional state. When our state changes, new choices become available.
Sometimes friends don’t solve our problems.
They simply create experiences that remind us who we can become.
4. Dil Chahta Hai. Most Misunderstandings Are About Meaning
One misunderstanding almost destroys three lifelong friendships.
Nobody is evil.
Nobody intends harm.
Each friend simply interprets events through a different internal reality.
How often does this happen in our own lives?
Someone forgets to call.
A message goes unanswered.
A comment sounds harsher than intended.
We react not to reality itself, but to the meaning we assign to it.
NLP reminds us that before reacting, it is worth asking:
“What else could this mean?”
That single question has probably saved more friendships than any clever argument ever has.
5. Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.. Connection Before Correction
Munna changes lives without sophisticated techniques.
He connects first.
Only then does he influence.
His famous “Jaadu Ki Jhappi” is more than a cinematic moment.
It is a reminder that people become receptive when they first feel understood.
One of the greatest mistakes we make in friendships is trying to solve problems before creating connection.
Advice rarely lands without rapport.
Understanding almost always does.
6. Rock On!!. Rewrite the Story
Old hurts become old identities.
The friends stop talking because each has replayed the same internal story for years.
Nothing changes until the story changes.
NLP calls this reframing.
The facts remain.
The meaning evolves.
Perhaps many broken friendships are not waiting for a perfect apology.
Perhaps they are waiting for a new interpretation.
7. Anand. The Meaning We Give Life
“Babumoshai… zindagi badi honi chahiye, lambi nahin.”
Few dialogues have reframed life as powerfully as this one.
Anand knows his time is limited, yet he chooses joy over despair, connection over self-pity and gratitude over fear.
From an NLP perspective, his circumstances do not determine his experience.
The meaning he gives those circumstances does.
Throughout the film, Anand repeatedly changes the emotional state of everyone around him. His optimism is not denial. It is a conscious choice about where to place his attention and how to respond to life’s challenges.
Perhaps that’s one of the greatest gifts a friend can offer.
Not to change our circumstances.
But to help us see them differently.
The Real Hero Is the Friendship
Bollywood gives us memorable dialogues, unforgettable songs and larger-than-life characters.
Yet the friendships stay with us because they reflect something deeply human.
They remind us that every relationship is built through communication.
Through understanding.
Through trust.
Through shared experiences.
Through the stories we tell ourselves about each other.
NLP simply gives us a language to understand why those friendships work.
A Friendship Day Reflection
Today, instead of simply forwarding another Friendship Day message, pause for a moment.
Ask yourself:
-
Which friend understands your map without trying to redraw it?
-
Whom have you misunderstood because you assumed your interpretation was the truth?
-
Which friendship deserves a conversation instead of an assumption?
-
Who has helped you become a better version of yourself simply by believing in you?
Perhaps the greatest Friendship Day gift is not another social media post.
It is becoming the kind of friend who listens before judging, understands before advising and connects before correcting.
And if an old Bollywood song suddenly makes you smile today, don’t be surprised.
Your unconscious mind has simply fired another beautiful anchor.
Happy Friendship Day.
