We negotiate every single day. Whether it’s deciding on deadlines with a team, discussing compensation with a client, managing expectations with family, or even bargaining with ourselves over an extra hour of sleep versus an early morning workout — negotiation is woven into the fabric of our lives.

Yet, despite its everyday presence, negotiation often feels daunting. Why? Because many of us view it as an adversarial process—a game of push and pull where one side wins, and the other loses.

But what if negotiation wasn’t about winning or losing? What if it was about creating solutions that work for all parties involved?

This shift in perspective—from conflict to consensus—is where true negotiation mastery begins.

The Biggest Myth About Negotiation

One of the greatest misconceptions about negotiation is that it’s about power and persuasion — who can out-talk, outsmart, or outmanoeuvre the other. While confidence and communication are important, the best negotiators don’t dominate the conversation. Instead, they listen, observe, and respond strategically.

Great negotiators don’t enter discussions thinking, “How do I win?” They enter with a mindset of “How do we create the best possible outcome?”

This subtle yet powerful shift transforms negotiation from a battle into a collaborative process.

The Core Pillars of Effective Negotiation

🔹 1. Empathy Over Ego

Negotiation isn’t just about logic and numbers—it’s about people. Understanding the other party’s needs, fears, and motivations can open doors that aggressive tactics never will.

💡 Explore This: Before your next negotiation, ask yourself: What does the other person truly want, beyond what they are asking for?

🔹 2. The Power of Silence

Most people feel uncomfortable with silence and rush to fill it with words. However, skilled negotiators understand that silence creates space for reflection, tension, and unexpected responses.

💡 Explore This: Next time you make a proposal, pause. Let the silence do the work. You might be surprised by the results.

 

🔹 3. Reframing the Narrative

The way a problem is presented shapes how it’s received. A simple shift in language can transform a deadlock into a dialogue.

💡 Example: Instead of saying “I can’t lower the price,” reframe it as “Here’s how we can add value while staying within budget.”

🔹 4. Mastering the “No”

Most people fear hearing “no” in a negotiation. But the best negotiators welcome it because they know “no” is often just the beginning of a deeper conversation.

💡 Explore This: When someone declines an offer, respond with curiosity: “What would need to change for this to work for you?”

🔹 5. The Psychology of Anchoring

Anchoring is a cognitive bias where the first number or offer presented heavily influences the negotiation. By setting the initial anchor, you frame the conversation in your favor.

💡 Example: If negotiating a salary, instead of saying “I was expecting around Rs. 1,50,000,” say “Based on my experience and market rates, I see Rs. 2,00,000 as a reasonable starting point.”

🔹 6. Mirroring for Connection

Repeating key words or phrases used by the other party builds trust and encourages them to elaborate. This technique, used by FBI negotiators, makes the other person feel heard and understood.

💡 Explore This: If someone says, “We’re concerned about budget constraints,” respond with, “I hear that budget constraints are a priority. What specifically are your biggest concerns?”

   It was a rainy evening in London, and the city’s infamous drizzle had turned into a steady downpour. Inside a warmly lit co-working café near Covent Garden, the chatter of entrepreneurs and the soft hum of laptops filled the air. Amidst the bustle, two distinct figures found themselves seated at the same table by chance—or perhaps by design. One was a thoughtful humanist with a flair for emotional intelligence, the other a precise technologist with a digital edge. They introduced themselves, and the conversation began.


Natural Language Processing (NLP): What a coincidence that we both ended up here. It seems the universe loves irony — two NLPs, often confused, now face to face.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP): (chuckling) Indeed! It’s rare for someone to think we might have anything in common, given how different we are. But perhaps this is the perfect opportunity to compare notes. What brings you here?

Natural Language Processing: I was invited to a conference nearby—talking about how machines are improving conversational AI and translation systems. It’s fascinating work. You?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming: I just wrapped up a workshop on communication and personal transformation. Helping people unlock their potential through better self-awareness and emotional alignment.

Natural Language Processing: That sounds powerful. It seems we both work with communication, though your focus is the human mind, and mine is more… machine-oriented.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming: Exactly. I work with individuals, teaching them to change their thought patterns, behaviours, and emotional states. Take reframing, for example. It’s all about shifting perspective to turn challenges into opportunities.

Natural Language Processing: Hmm. That reminds me of sentiment analysis. When users leave feedback like, “This product is a disaster!” I help systems identify the tone — negative in this case — and guide the next steps to respond appropriately. It’s like reframing digitally.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming: Interesting! It seems we both deal with perception, but while I help humans reshape their inner dialogue, you are training machines to understand and respond to external dialogue. So tell me — how do you teach machines to make sense of human language?

Natural Language Processing: Oh, it’s quite complex. Machines rely on algorithms and vast datasets to find patterns in text. For instance, when someone says, “I’m banking on you,” I analyse the context to understand they are not talking about a financial institution but trust. It’s all about probabilities and context.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming: Context is everything, isn’t it? I teach people to pay attention to verbal and non-verbal cues. Someone saying “I’m fine” with a slouched posture often isn’t fine at all.

Natural Language Processing: Sounds like you focus on the nuance that machines still struggle with — emotions, tone, and body language. I envy that ability. Machines may recognise patterns, but they lack the empathy you bring to the table.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming: True, but empathy alone isn’t always enough. Your speed and precision are enviable. Imagine if we combined forces. What if my reframing techniques could integrate into AI tools to help users manage stress or improve mental health?

Natural Language Processing: Now, that’s a thought. Imagine AI-powered apps using your principles to help people shift their perspectives. Perhaps a chatbot that offers reframing prompts when someone shares a negative thought.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming: That could be revolutionary — using technology to democratise access to personal growth. But enough about work. Do you ever feel misunderstood?

Natural Language Processing: Constantly! People assume I’m this omnipotent force that understands language. But really, I’m just good at spotting patterns. Machines don’t feel or truly understand — they just simulate it. What about you?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming: Oh, where do I begin? Some call me a pseudoscience, others think I’m just about positive thinking. But there’s so much more — anchoring, modelling excellence, understanding behavioural patterns. It’s science blended with art.

Natural Language Processing: Isn’t it ironic? We’re both deeply rooted in language and understanding, yet often misunderstood ourselves. But that’s what makes this meeting serendipitous. Perhaps it’s time to redefine how people perceive us.


As the rain continued to patter against the café windows, the two NLPs leaned forward, their conversation growing deeper. By the time the café began to empty, they were already imagining a future where the human mind and machine intelligence collaborated in harmony.


It’s not every day that Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Natural Language Processing meet, but when they do, it sparks a fascinating discussion. Despite their differences, both NLPs share a mission: to decode, understand, and improve communication—whether it’s between humans or between humans and machines.

To succeed, start by building rapport. People are more likely to collaborate when they feel understood and respected.

Listen actively to uncover not just what they want, but why they want it. The “why” often reveals shared goals or opportunities for creative solutions. Use language patterns like reframing to turn “problems” into “possibilities.” For instance, instead of focusing on a disagreement, you can explore how it opens up space for innovation.

Stay flexible — remember the NLP presupposition: the person with the greatest flexibility controls the system. When you are adaptable, you can pivot strategies to meet mutual needs.

Negotiation is less about convincing and more about connecting. When both sides feel heard, you’re not just closing a deal—you’re building trust and setting the stage for future collaboration.

Most likely, our answer will be Shweta.

If there’s one buzzword that stirs up equal parts excitement and apprehension, it’s AI – Artificial Intelligence. For some, it’s a fascinating leap into the future. For others, it feels like a threat looming over the sanctity of human creativity. But is that really true?

As an NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) Coach, I’ve always been fascinated by the power of words. The language we use frames our beliefs and shapes our reality. And in the case of AI, I believe the resistance doesn’t come from the technology itself but from one specific word: artificial.

The Problem with “Artificial”

Think about it. The term “artificial” often carries negative connotations. Artificial jewellery? Fake. Artificial branded goods? Counterfeit. Artificial sweeteners? Not as good as the real thing. Humans naturally gravitate towards authenticity, and the word “artificial” feels inherently detached, even untrustworthy.

When we call this remarkable technological advancement “Artificial Intelligence,” it’s no surprise that some people perceive it as a substitute, even a competitor, to genuine human intelligence. For many people, this framing can feel like a challenge to their originality and imagination.

AI: A Partner, Not a Rival

But here’s the thing: AI doesn’t diminish creativity; it amplifies it. Your creativity is the foundation that extracts and guides the potential of AI. Whether you’re generating ideas, solving problems, or exploring new possibilities, AI acts as a powerful ally, not an adversary. It’s a tool that mirrors your intentions and augments your capabilities.

So, what if we shifted the narrative? What if we reframed the “A” in AI?

From Artificial to Augmented, Amplified, and More

Words matter, and the way we talk about AI can transform how we think about it. Let’s ditch “Artificial” and explore alternatives:

  • Augmented Intelligence: Highlights how AI extends and enhances human intelligence.

  • Added Intelligence: Emphasises that AI is an additional layer of support.

  • Amplified Intelligence: Focuses on AI’s ability to scale creativity and innovation.

  • Adaptive Intelligence: Suggests AI’s flexibility to evolve and align with our needs.

  • Aligned Intelligence: Reinforces the idea of AI working in harmony with human goals.

Reframing AI in this way not only shifts perspectives but also dissolves the mental barriers holding people back from embracing its potential. When we stop seeing AI as artificial and start viewing it as an extension of our own intelligence, we unlock new ways of collaboration.

Breaking the Creativity Myth

One of the biggest myths about AI is that it stifles creativity. But in reality, it’s your creativity that determines how effectively you use AI. Think of it as a paintbrush – the brush itself doesn’t create art; the artist does. AI can suggest ideas, streamline workflows, and even open doors to unexplored avenues, but it’s your imagination that drives the process.

Let’s Redefine AI Together

It’s time to change the conversation around AI. By reframing its meaning, we can transform hesitation into curiosity and scepticism into opportunity. And who knows? Perhaps a small shift in perspective is all it takes for someone to see AI not as a competitor but as a creative companion.

The Fish Does Not Know What is Water

A young man once approached a wise mentor, troubled by the monotony of his life. “I feel stuck,” he said. “Nothing seems to change.”

The mentor smiled and pointed to the river flowing nearby. “You see the water in this river?” he asked.

“Yes,” the young man replied.

“Do the fish see it?”

The man hesitated. “Probably not—they are too immersed in it.”

“Exactly,” said the mentor. “You are like the fish, surrounded by the currents of your thoughts, routines, and assumptions. To change your life, first recognize the water you swim in.”

Imagine a fish swimming in the vast ocean. Water surrounds it, nurtures it, sustains its life—but does the fish ever stop to think about the water? Most likely not. Why? Because water is its default reality, something so omnipresent that it becomes invisible.

This simple yet profound idea gives us a metaphorical lens to explore our own lives. Just like the fish, we are often unaware of the “water” that surrounds us—the beliefs, assumptions, and systems that shape our reality.

What Is the “Water” in Our Lives?

Our “water” could be many things:

  • Cultural Norms: The customs and traditions we inherit, often followed without questioning their relevance or truth.
  • Beliefs and Values: Ideas ingrained in us by family, society, or experiences that influence our decisions without us realizing it.
  • Routines and Habits: Daily patterns that feel natural, but may not necessarily serve our growth.

When we fail to see the “water,” we miss the opportunity to question, to evolve, and to take charge of our lives.

Why Doesn’t the Fish Know the Water?

Interestingly, the fish does not know water because the fish does not know what it means to be without water. It has never experienced the absence of what sustains it. This highlights a broader truth about life: often, we only recognize something’s presence when we have felt its absence.

We understand light because we have known darkness. We value freedom because we have seen or experienced its constraints. To truly grasp the essence of our “water,” we must contrast it with its opposite. This duality—knowing one through the absence of the other—is a powerful teacher. It compels us to reflect on the unseen forces that shape our existence.

Why Don’t We Notice the Water?

  • Familiarity: What is always present tends to fade into the background.
  • Comfort Zones: Acknowledging the water means stepping into the unknown, which can feel unsettling.
  • Bias Blind Spot: We all have blind spots that prevent us from seeing the bigger picture or recognizing alternative perspectives.

How Can We Start Seeing the Water?

  1. Pause and Reflect: Create moments of stillness to examine your beliefs, behaviors, and thought patterns. Journaling or meditative practices can help.
  2. Seek Diverse Perspectives: Engage with people who think differently, read books that challenge your views, or travel to new environments.
  3. Ask Powerful Questions:

    • Why do I believe this?
    • Is this serving my highest potential?
    • What if the opposite were true?
  4. Be Open to Change: Awareness often leads to discomfort, but discomfort is the precursor to growth.

The Gift of Awareness

When the fish begins to recognize the water, it unlocks a new level of existence. It can swim with intention, choose new directions, or even leap to explore the world beyond its pond.

Similarly, when we notice the “water” in our lives, we gain the power to reshape our realities. We stop living on autopilot and start creating lives aligned with our deepest values and aspirations.

So, take a moment to ask yourself:

  • What is my water?
  • Am I swimming through life unaware of the forces shaping my journey?
  • And most importantly, am I ready to dive deeper into self-awareness?

Because the first step to transformation is seeing the invisible. And when you do, a whole new world opens up—one ripple at a time.

Have you ever found yourself revisiting a frustrating moment long after it’s passed, replaying it in your mind like a broken record? Or perhaps you’ve proudly narrated the story to someone else, showcasing how well you managed to keep your cool. These common experiences underline the fascinating yet complex world of emotional regulation.

Let’s dive into it together, starting with a scenario.

Imagine this:

You are in a meeting, and a colleague unexpectedly criticises your work. A familiar heat rises in your chest, your palms start to sweat, and the urge to retort sharply surges. This is the trigger. How you navigate this emotional crossroad determines whether you manage your experience or your expression.

Expression Management involves keeping that sharp retort locked away. You plaster on a polite smile and respond calmly. Externally, you’ve aced the test. But internally, a storm brews. The frustration simmers beneath the surface, waiting for another outlet. Later that day, you might find yourself snapping at a loved one or venting to a friend about the incident, reliving the moment to justify your restrained reaction. While it’s commendable to manage outward expression, relying solely on this approach can lead to suppressed emotions finding indirect, often unhealthy, outlets.

Now, let’s explore an alternative path: Experience Management.

Experience management is about diving deeper – shifting your internal narrative rather than just your outward reaction. Picture the same meeting. As the critique lands, you take a deep breath. Instead of resisting the emotional surge, you acknowledge it: “I’m feeling defensive right now. That’s okay.” By naming the emotion, you reduce its intensity.

Then, you activate your “Inner Balance Mode.” It’s as if you’ve turned on an internal stabiliser. You remind yourself that this critique isn’t a personal attack but an opportunity for growth. The trigger loses its sting, and your response aligns naturally with your calm internal state. The beauty here? The experience doesn’t linger or demand a later venting session. It’s already resolved, internally and externally.

The Risks of Expression Management Alone

Suppressing emotions can be like putting a lid on a boiling pot. Eventually, the pressure will find a way out. You might lash out at someone uninvolved or repeatedly narrate the event, subtly seeking validation for your self-control. This cycle not only affects your relationships but also reinforces a habit of disconnection from your true feelings.

In contrast, Experience Management fosters congruence. You’re not battling with yourself to appear calm while feeling chaotic inside. Instead, you’re genuinely present, experiencing emotions fully but without being overwhelmed. It’s a sustainable approach that nurtures both mental and emotional health.

 

Practical Steps to Master Experience Management

  1. Pause and Breathe: When triggered, take a slow, deep breath. This simple act shifts your focus and buys you a moment to respond thoughtfully.
  2. Name the Emotion: Identify what you’re feeling. Anger? Hurt? Frustration? Labelling the emotion reduces its intensity and makes it manageable.
  3. Reframe the Trigger: Ask yourself, “What’s another way to see this situation?” Shifting your perspective can turn a critique into a growth opportunity or a challenge into a learning experience.
  4. Let It Pass: Once the moment is over, remind yourself that it’s in the past. There’s no need to carry it forward into your day.
  5. Reflect, Don’t Relive: If you’re reflecting on the event, focus on what you learned rather than the emotional charge it carried.

 

Where Are You Operating From?

As you navigate your daily triggers, take a moment to reflect: are you operating from a place of expression management or experience management? The former may offer short-term peace, but the latter is the key to long-term emotional harmony.

The next time life throws an unexpected twist, turn inward first. Anchor yourself in the present, breathe deeply, and engage your inner balance mode. You’ll find that when your internal world is steady, your external world follows suit.

After all, emotional regulation isn’t about suppressing the storm but learning to dance in the rain.
