One Minute NLP – Circle of Excellence

The Circle of Excellence is a technique used for accessing and enhancing positive mental and emotional states, based on the basic NLP concept of Anchoring. Here’s a short explanation of the process:

1. Identify a desired state: Begin by identifying a positive mental or emotional state that you want to enhance or access, such as confidence, calmness, motivation, or creativity.

2. Recall a specific memory: Think of a specific memory or experience when you felt the desired state strongly. It should be a vivid and positive memory that represents the state you want to access.

3. Enhance the memory: Immerse yourself in the memory and intensify the positive feelings associated with it. Pay attention to the sensory details, such as what you saw, heard, felt, or smelled during that experience.

4. Create a virtual circle on the floor: Imagine a circle on the floor that represents a physical boundary for your positive state. Visualize it clearly in your mind, specifying its color, texture, and size. The circle symbolizes the containment of your desired state.

5. Step into the circle: Mentally step into the virtual circle, bringing with you the intensified positive state from the memory. As you enter the circle, feel the state becoming even stronger and more present within the boundary.

6. Anchor the state with the circle: While standing inside the virtual circle, associate the positive state with the boundary itself. Absorb the empowering qualities of the circle, understanding that it supports and reinforces your desired state.

7. Step out and reset: Step out of the virtual circle, leaving the state contained within it. Take a moment to reset and let go of any tension or attachment to the state.

8. Reenter and reinforce: Repeat the process by mentally stepping back into the virtual circle, reconnecting with the positive state, and anchoring it with the boundary. Each time you reenter, focus on reinforcing and deepening the association between the circle and the desired state.

9. Access the state with the circle: Whenever you want to access or reinforce the positive state, imagine stepping into the virtual circle. Allow the circle to serve as a trigger, instantly evoking and amplifying the desired state within you.

The incorporation of a virtual circle on the floor adds a visual and spatial component to the Circle of Excellence technique, enhancing the sense of containment and support for the positive state you wish to access.

Meta Magic – TWO WORDS FOR LIFE

The Mount Serat monastery in Spain requires its disciples to commit to a strict discipline of silence. The only time they are allowed to speak is once in every two years, and that too,  only two words.

Jonah, a disciple, who had completed his first two years was invited to make his first two-word presentation. “Terrible Food”, he said. Two years later, when the invitation was extended again, Jonah said, “Lumpy bed”. Further two years down the line, he proclaimed “I quit”.

The master said, “I am not surprised. All you have done in the last six years was complain.”

My question to you is: “What if you were asked to describe your life in two words?”

The Law of Requisite Variety

If I ask you what can you learn from play dough, what would be your answer?

For me, the most important lesson I can learn from play dough is flexibility. You can bend it, break it or cut it, it will always be ready to get a shape.

Similarly, when children want something, they have never-ending ideas to get it. They will be flexible enough to ask multiple times.

A person whose behaviour is as flexible as play dough is the most influential one. Almost all magnetic personas have magnetism in their ability to be shaped and moulded into new ones. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean compromise or adjustment. It is more about looking at failures as feedback and obstacles as opportunities.

In NLP, this is called “Behavioral Flexibility”. The Law of Requisite Variety in NLP simply states that the person with the most flexibility of behaviour has the greatest influence on others and on the outcome. When you dramatically increase your flexibility in the way you communicate, you dramatically increase the level of influence that you have over other people around you and on situations and circumstances.

So how flexible are you on a scale of 1 to 10?

Meta Magic – The Anatomy of Wealth

Once a merchant bought a new camel. He asked his servant to remove the saddle after getting the camel home. The servant discovered a tiny, velvet, purple pouch in the saddle. He handed it over to his master. Inside the pouch, they found 20 sparkling, real diamonds. The servant got ecstatic and began congratulating the master.

The master however said, “I paid for the camel, not for the diamonds. Just because I found these, they are not mine”. The servant rolled his eyes and tried his best to convince the master, but the master was honest to the T and went back to the camel seller to return the pouch.

The camel seller heaved a sigh of relief and gratefully offered two diamonds as a reward to the merchant, who gracefully declined the offer. On frequent insistence by the camel seller, the merchant said: “I already have two of the most precious diamonds.”

Dumbfounded, the camel seller recounted the diamonds and still found 20. Looking at his puzzled face, the merchant said, “My two most precious diamonds which make me the wealthiest are honesty and self-respect”.

My question to you is, “Which are the values that you consider as your most precious diamonds?”

THE MEANING OF NLP

NLP is an attitude that has to do with curiosity, with wanting to know about things, wanting to be able to influence things, and wanting to be able to influence them in a way that’s worthwhile.”- Richard Bandler

NLP is the holistic tour in the garden of your mind, where with the right tools, we can sow the right seeds, nourish useful thoughts and grow dense trees of strength and resilience.

Right from the first step of knowing the difference between information, meaning and knowledge, NLP takes us towards the final destination of wisdom. Self-awareness is the soul of NLP and that’s what makes it an intriguing study.

From ‘What makes me do what I do?’ to ‘What makes me not do what I don’t do?’ to ‘What makes me do what I don’t want to do’ and finally discovering ‘How do I do and undo all of these unknowingly & knowingly?’ is like the hidden pandora box of insights.

To sum it up, NLP is the process of not just knowing the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of every tiny choice in our life, but it is also a tool to dig deeper into ‘what’, ‘when’ and ‘WHEN NOT’, and much much more… Keep the curiosity alive by joining the next NLP Foundation Weekend which is complimentary for you and your loved ones. Meta-Magic – Where are you Looking for your Keys to Success?

Here is a famous Mulla Nasrudin story – a typical blend of humour but with a profound metaphor.

A man is walking home late one night when he sees an anxious Mulla Nasrudin down on all fours, crawling on his hands and knees on the road, searching frantically under a streetlight for something on the ground.

“Mulla, what have you lost?” the passer-by asks.

“I am searching for my key,” Nasrudin says worriedly.

“I’ll help you look,” the man says and joins Mulla Nasrudin in the search. After a frantic and futile search for the lost key, the man asks Nasrudin, “Tell me Mulla, do you remember where exactly did you drop the key?”

Nasrudin waves his arm back toward the darkness and says, “Over there, in my house. I lost the key inside my house…” Shocked and exasperated, the passer-by jumps up and shouts at Mulla Nasrudin, “Then why are you searching for the key out here in the street?”

“Because there is more light here than inside my house,” Mulla Nasrudin answers nonchalantly.

My question to you is – Where are you looking for the keys to your happiness, to your success, to your life? We all have our keys within us, but how many of us have the courage to dig deeper within to find those keys?

One Minute NLP

THE MIND IS A MEANING MAKING MACHINE

A pair of twins grew up to be diametrical opposites – while one became an alcohol-addict, the other remained a teetotaler. When each of them were asked the reason for their respective preferences, surprisingly both gave the same reason:

Because my father was an alcohol-addict.”

Same family, same upbringing, same parents, same alcoholic father, same story, but different outcomes. How? What made them different from each other?

While it may be easy for us to assign reasons for our behaviour or our results to our environment or to the way we are conditioned, the bottomline here is that we are influenced, not by the situation or circumstances, but the meaning that we give to the situation or circumstances. Our mind is a meaning-making machine.

Some questions to reflect upon:

  1. What meaning are you making about the crucial issues in your life?
  2. What can be the other meanings of the same issue?

Meta-Magic

Are you a vacationer, a volunteer or a victim?

A man wanted to assess the worthiness of his 3 sons to choose his successor. He took them to a place where each of them were locked in separate messy rooms for a full day.

The eldest son spent the whole day cribbing about the mess and talking to himself about the stressful situation that his father had put him into.

The second one did not know what to do or why he was put in the room. So he slept for the whole day within the same mess.

The youngest one decided to clear up the whole room and segregated the stuff that could be useful and also noted down how he could put most of the things to better use.

This simple test made it easier for the father to select his youngest son to be his ideal successor.

My question to you is:

What patterns do you notice in your thoughts and behaviour?

In which situations, are you a Vacationer (who prefers to chill out and take every opportunity to laze around)?

In which situations, are you a Volunteer (who prefers to make the most of the available options and make them work for you)?

In which situations, are you a Victim (who prefers to put the responsibility or blame on the situations and circumstances around you)?

“Aaya hu, kuch to like jaunga” (loosely translated as “I have come here, I will take back something with me”). This funny dialogue from the comedy movie Andaz Apna Apna reminds us to be clear about the outcome at all times. While recently attending a very powerful training on Negotiations, the trainer mentioned that it is important to be clear about your thresholds, must-haves, wish-to-haves and concessions in any deal. And that reminded me of this catchline from the character Crime Master Gogo who is always absolutely clear about taking something of benefit to him from every situation.

Announcement of the Week

So here is how the path emerged recently in my NLP journey. 15 months ago, I had published a research paper with the International Journal of Neurolinguistics and Gestalt Practice (IJNGP) on “Interpretation of Metaphors” (Here is the link to the research paper). This effort has got recognised by the McStem Eduversity USA, resulting in me being awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Literature in NLP. The Winning Post this week is about this announcement.

With utmost heartfelt gratitude to you for your continuous support and love always,

See you again next week.
